Marks and Symbols

Summary

Graphic designers need to create a successful logo that makes an impact, can be read easily, and noticeable. There are two categories I have learned, marks and symbols. Marks include categories such as symbols, pictographs, lettermarks, logos/logo type, combination marks, and trademarks. Knowing these helpful tips can make a good logo.

Symbol

A symbol is when a type isn't used. It's what easily identifies the corporation, agency or institution. The symbol should be simple, rather than complex. Going along with simple, it should contain at most one color, can be noticeable at 1/2" diameter, and flow altogether. It should be unique, have a simple gestalt (what the eye focuses on), and create a quick, memorable impact. The symbol needs to convey its message clear for the audience. Also make sure it shows whatever the symbol is for is in a positive light.

Logos

A logo, also known as logo type, is basically word(s) that represent the company, brand, project, group. Like symbols, they both represent and help people identify that label, should be unique, and are easy to comprehend and read. However the difference between the two are that logos deal with type or words, while symbols deal with symbols or pictures. Also another difference I think is that symbols are easier and more likely to get identified rather than a logo.

3 Key Facts

The important facts I have learned are:
  1. A symbol must be unique and simple because how can anyone really remember or identify the logo while passing by if its complex, and it would look bad on the company and designer, cause confusion, or lead to suing if the symbol was copied.
  2. Make sure you have a trademark. So that the mark can't be stolen or copied.
  3. Have a logo so that anyone can look up the company which would be easier than relying on a symbol.
My favorite thing I have learned and will be valuable in the future is making a symbol and logo easy to see, read, and comprehend because it isn't any of those three things, then it can turn into the wrong direction, which isn't what I want.

Overall I have learned new and valuable things on creating a good logo/symbol. These will be put to use in my projects in class.
